Community Service

Hermanus Primary School has a wonderful community service programme. Inspired by Werner Cloete, we believe that: “If your school does not make a difference in the community, then your school is irrelevant.” One of the ways our school can make a difference is through service.

How it works?

The purpose of this initiative is to give learners the opportunity to develop values such as empathy and service, to make a meaningful contribution to the community, and to recognise those who go the extra mile by volunteering their time. Learners who reach the required number of service hours will receive recognition at the prize-giving ceremony.

Important guidelines:

  1. Parents/guardians are responsible for the learner’s safety, communication with the event/organisation manager, and transport.
  2. No work will count towards a learner’s total hours unless it is signed off by the responsible person at the recognised event/organisation.
  3. The completed form must be returned to the school and signed off by the school representative (currently Mr Geo Coetsee).
  4. Any work for which remuneration has been received cannot be claimed.
  5. The maximum points that can be obtained from a single organization is 20 per year.

Any Grade 4–7 learner can get involved with the many organisations already doing voluntary work in our community. Also keep an eye out for projects we will be running this year where learners can get involved. The first project takes place on Friday, 17 April, where learners can assist at the Hermanus Night Shelter.

Learners who do voluntary work on the school grounds or with external organisations can earn points for the time they spend on it. Before they begin, they must collect a form from the school, which must be completed and signed by the organisation.

Our upcoming events:

On Friday 17th April we have arranged with Hermanus Night shelter that learners can see what happens at the shelter and volunteer their time to help with setting up tables for dinner as well as cleaning should any be needed. We will all gather at the shelter (28 Malva Street, Mount Pleasant, Hermanus) at 15h50 in order to volunteer our time from 16h00-17h00. Parents are asked not to leave the area for the duration of time.

On the 3rd of May Hermanus will be hosting the annual Race2Hermanus, a full day Triathlon where competitors swim in the new harbour, then cycle to Stanford and back, and finish with a run that ends near the old harbour. Volunteers are needed to help with collecting timing chips and hand out medals and work at the medical station.
